Final Project: Annie Leibovitz
Kieran Heung
Personal Background
Annie Leibovitz was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1949. When she was in school she started to become involved in art endeavors such as painting and playing music. The when her father was stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam war she started to take photographs. She then enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute studying painting. During this time she continued to improve her photography skills.
Style
Annie Leibovitz’s photography is portrait photography. She does a lot of portrait photographs for magazines and companies such as the magazine “Rolling Stone” and “Vanity Fair”. Her photos usually advertise either a person or thing on a magazine. They are mostly portrait photos of the main focus of the magazine. They make you want to explore more and find out more about what the magazines are about, so her photography is very influential.
Philosophy
The main ideas of Annie Leibovitz’s photographs are the main idea of whatever she’s advertising. They are trying to tell to tell people about what she’s advertising by featuring them in her photos. She also tries to persuade people to explore more on the focus through her photos. I think that her work is best described as social because she she does a lot of work with the media and lots of modern entertainment. Also because she does lots of photos of very famous people.
Influences
Annie Leibovitz's photography has influenced my photography very much. One thing I’ve noticed is that the focus (the person) is almost never exactly in the middle of the photo. So I’ve learned from this that the focus doesn’t have to be in the center and sometimes it’s actually more influential if it is not centered. I also learned how detailed you have to be with objects in your background. Who’s in the photo and what objects are in the background tell you a lot about what the focus is really about. Also the positioning of one person can really change the mood or the focus of the photo and what it means. So when taking photos you have to be very careful and make sure you take into account everything in it.
